Simply because italians in general and romans in particular are so stupid that i'm quiet not proud of being italian.

What the .... are u talking about? I don't think this could be true. No way! Generally when u take a seat you are given a "menu" which includes prices in euros. Or they are listed on a sign outside the restaurant. You have the possibility to check the price of the dishes before eating....if it seems too expensive just stand up and move towards another restaurant. If the bill is not consistent with the dishes eaten just tell it and do calculations together. If someone eats for 50 euros, get charged for 100 and pays anyway, well he's an idiot (or very rich) - or a rich idiot :) and he would have been stealed everywhere, not just in Rome.
Cheers!

As everywhere in the world:
1) check the price list outside the bar or restaurant (it's mandatory in Italy)
2) pay only what have you read before!

If you go in wrong resturants its not our problem... Try to be more carefull when you go to eat in someplace... look first at the cost.. as we italians do...

Because Rome, like other big town, is one of the most turistic town in Italy...Think to N.Y.C or Paris or London...

It most likely does not happen at all restaurants. However, I think that some unscrupulous restaurants do take advantage of tourists in any large cosmopolitan city such as Rome. Also, if people cannot speak the native language they are more prone to dishonest treatment.
I read John-John's reply and I chuckled. When New Yorkers talk of gangs they usually mean organized crime which usually means Mafioso.

For the same reason Gangs in New York N.Y. steal from turists! (Gangs being inserted in every aspect of jobs in this City, that never sleeps).
That's the way the cookies crumble! I bet you must go to bed! And BTW, if mafiosi rule over the world, we all...R! Unless Pretty Boy Floydd was a ...Mafioso!
Ciao....John-John.

first. are you american?
second: I think they don't steal from tourists. they only have to pay the "coperto", a kind of bill for the service.
third. are you sure those information are true????
